Process & fees

Here you can read how treatment with me begins, how it works and what costs you can expect.

Process

Step by step towards treatment

Every treatment begins with getting to know each other. Only then do we decide together whether and how we continue.

At a glance

  • Sessions of 50 minutes
  • Usually weekly, later at longer intervals
  • At the practice in Ettlingen or via video session
  • For private patients, Beihilfe-eligible patients and self-payers

The steps

Call me or send me an email. A few sentences about what brings you here and when you can best be reached are enough. I will get back to you to arrange a first appointment.

In the first sessions – known in Germany as probatory sessions – we get to know each other. We clarify your concerns, I carry out a careful assessment and together we consider what kind of support makes sense. You can take your time to see whether working together feels right for you.

Many private health insurers and Beihilfe offices require an application before the actual therapy begins. I will support you with this and prepare the necessary documents. If you pay for treatment yourself, this step does not apply.

We work on the goals we agreed on at the start. How many sessions are needed depends on your concerns. Short-term therapy often comprises up to 24 sessions, long-term therapy correspondingly more. Coaching is usually shorter and is arranged individually.

Towards the end of treatment, the intervals between sessions become longer. This gives you the chance to try out what you have learned in everyday life. Together we look at what will help you stay stable after therapy.

Fees

Fees and cost coverage

As a private practice, I invoice according to the German fee schedule for psychotherapists (GOP). After your sessions you receive an invoice that you can submit to your insurer.

Private health insurers usually cover the costs of outpatient psychotherapy in full or in part. How many sessions are reimbursed and whether an application is needed in advance depends on your policy. Please clarify this with your insurer before starting.

Part of the costs is reimbursed by the Beihilfe office, the remaining share usually by your private health insurer. Psychotherapy generally requires an application with an expert review, which we prepare together after the first sessions.

You can pay for treatment yourself, regardless of your insurance. In that case no diagnosis is passed on to an insurer, and you decide freely when to start and how long to continue.

My practice is not licensed to bill statutory health insurance. Patients with statutory insurance are welcome as self-payers; in this case the statutory insurer generally does not reimburse the costs.

Coaching – for example around an unfulfilled wish for a child or the transition to parenthood – is not medical treatment. Insurers do not cover it; it is paid privately.

A 50-minute psychotherapy session costs between €100 and €168. The exact amount depends on the GOP and the effort involved in each case. I will discuss it openly with you before we begin. A coaching session costs €150.

Appointments

Booked appointments and cancellations

A booked appointment is reserved exclusively for you. If you cannot attend, please cancel at least 48 hours in advance. Appointments not cancelled in time will be invoiced to you privately, as insurers do not cover them. If something unforeseen happens, please talk to me – we will find a fair solution.

Acute crisis

When it cannot wait

My practice is not an emergency service and I am not available around the clock. In an acute mental health crisis, you can get help immediately here.

Available right away

  • Emergency number: 112
  • Out-of-hours medical service: 116 117
  • TelefonSeelsorge crisis line (in German), 24/7, anonymous and free of charge: 0800 111 0 111 or 0800 111 0 222
  • The psychiatric emergency department of the nearest hospital

While you wait for a therapy place

If you are waiting for a therapy place, you do not have to get through this time alone. These can be a first point of contact:

  • Your GP
  • A psychiatric practice, for example for additional treatment with medication
  • Psychosocial counselling services near you
  • Day clinics and hospitals, if more intensive treatment is needed

It is a good idea to contact several practices – this increases your chances of finding a place soon.
