ADHD in adulthood
Overview
More than inattention
ADHD begins in childhood and persists into adulthood for many people. Estimates suggest that around two to three in a hundred adults are affected. Often the ADHD was never recognised – especially in women and in people who compensated for their difficulties with a great deal of effort for a long time.
Exhaustion, low mood or anxiety often come on top. Not infrequently, these are the actual reason for seeking help.
Possible signs
- Difficulty sustaining attention and finishing tasks
- Forgetfulness, chaos with appointments and paperwork
- Procrastinating even when something matters to you
- Inner restlessness, impatience and impulsive decisions
- Strong mood swings and quick irritability
- The feeling that everyday life takes more effort for you than for others
Good to know
ADHD has nothing to do with a lack of intelligence or willpower. Many people also report strengths such as creativity, enthusiasm or the ability to immerse themselves deeply in topics that interest them.
A diagnosis can be a relief: it explains much of what was previously experienced as a personal weakness.
Assessment and treatment
Step by step towards clarity
The first step is a careful assessment. It clarifies whether ADHD is present and which other causes or accompanying conditions play a role.
- In-depth conversations about your current situation and your development since childhood
- Standardised questionnaires and interviews
- Where possible: school reports or assessments from family members
Cognitive behavioural treatment focuses on structuring your everyday life, dealing with impulsivity and mood swings, and changing distressing patterns. Medication can also be helpful; it is prescribed by a medical specialist, with whom I can coordinate at your request.
Frequently asked questions
Questions and answers
Yes. For a diagnosis, it is important that the difficulties already existed in childhood, even if they were not recognised at the time. That is why memories, school reports or accounts from family members play an important role.
No. As a private practice, you can contact me directly. Depending on your policy, your insurer may require a medical report (Konsiliarbericht) before treatment begins.
No. As a psychological psychotherapist, I do not prescribe medication. If medication seems appropriate, I will recommend an assessment by a medical specialist.
The cost of an assessment depends on the scope and complexity of the clinical question and typically ranges from €550 to €850. Costs are correspondingly higher for more complex questions, differential diagnostic assessments, or a combined ADHD and autism (ASD) assessment. Fees are charged according to the German fee schedule for psychotherapists (Gebührenordnung für Psychotherapeuten, GOP).
Private health insurers and Beihilfe usually cover both diagnostic evaluation and psychotherapy in full or in part. Please check the conditions with your insurer in advance. More under Process & fees.
